Motivation to start |
Trustees have been involved in other NGO's and they wanted to contribute their mite to society. Trustees opted for work towards senior citizens as many other NGO's are involved in working with children, the physically challenged, etc. Trustees wanted to help families who love and care for their elders but who are constrained by space or manpower due to nuclear families that have no room for attendants, etc. as is common everywhere. Trustees thought that the senior citizens should have a comfortable place to spend the evening of their lives with dignity and courage. Senior citizens have very little help as most old age homes concentrate on the fit and fine people who can take care of their own personal hygiene. There are very few Senior Citizens homes that concentrate on caregiving for the bed-ridden and those with ailments due to age. With these ideas, Asha Jeevan took on its present shape with the motto of "HELP US TO HELP THE LIVING". Trust is also a care-giving centre for post-operative cases irrespective of age restrictions. |

Our Mission
Our motto: "Help us to help the Living"
Our mission is to lend a helping hand to the hard working sons and daughters, who have no time to take care of the family's health due to their working hours, or because they just don't live close to their parents. Asha Jeevan is a service oriented organisation dedicating their services to bedridden elders who are loved by their near and dear ones. This includes people from all walks of life who are spinsters, child widows, destitute, single people and issueless elderly couple and generally people with or without a support system. As a small drop in the ocean Asha Jeevan wants to give them if not a very luxurious life, at least a reasonably comfortable life spending their twilight years in dignity and honour with their self respect intact.
As Asha Jeevan receives no government grants or funding from any sponsor agency, we are compelled to collect charges from certain sections of the residents. We look after a number of destitutes also. We need all the help we can get to keep up to our motto of "Help us to help the Living." As we look after these abandoned senior citizens without discrimination, we started asking for adoption/sponsorship of them. Sponsors do not have to pay deposits, only monthly maintenance including medical costs. To support these forsaken people we are compelled to stretch our hands towards philanthropists and other generous people. (See "How you can help us").
It is all thanks to Mr. Dayanand Pai of M/s. Century Builders, who had donated the land for our purpose and M/s. Canara Bank, who helped with a loan that we are having our own premises and building. Asha Jeevan thanks all other donors, big and small for all the help in myriad ways that have shaped Asha Jeevan to become what it is today and function with all necessary facilities.
It was with the opening of the Geriatric Homes that Asha Jeevan soon realized the acute need for professional nursing aides to help the geriatric residents maintain their personal hygiene. So Asha Jeevan started training boys and girls from the economically weaker sections at the Asha Jeevan Home under the guidance of qualified and well trained medical staff to provide such care.

History
Asha Jeevan, meaning "Life with Hope", was conceived with the purpose of serving both senior citizens as well as families of people who are differently- abled due to physical or mental or other handicaps. Differently- abled seniors need constant attention in the sunset years of their lives and families who love their near and dear ones look for an institution that caters to their elder's special needs. Due to the change in the family structure - from the multi-generation family under one roof to the nucleus family - the family network system is not able to cope with those tasks. Asha Jeevan Home was visualised as a residence with a homely atmosphere so that the senior citizens would not feel uprooted from the surroundings to which they were accustomed, and to fill their remaining years with much-needed comfort, care and attention. With these objectives in mind, Asha Jeevan Home for the Aged Trust started their Home for senior citizens in March 2000, housed in rented place and is currently operating from their own premises at 57, 7th Cross, Pavamana Nagar, Kembathalli Road, Gottigere, Bannerghatta Road, Bangalore 560 083.
Asha Jeevan soon found that people from all walks of life including those who are hale and hearty and those who are partially disabled and fully bedridden elders need this kind of Home. There are many institutions which serve the elderly but very few of them are willing to accommodate a person when he falls sick or becomes dependant on others for his daily hygiene. Out of several old age homes in Bangalore mentioned in the directory from the Elder's Helpline, Asha Jeevan is one Home who take in senior citizens who are immobile and those who suffer from age related ailments
In the beginning the founder trustees were not aware of the various problems that afflict the elderly. The trustees soon realized the mental agony that families face with keeping their elders at home, that too with the difficulty in finding help to take care of the elders in a sustained manner. In such an environment, families need an institution to provide care giving, tailored to the needs of their loved ones, for which the founder trustees had been trained for 2 years under the guidance of Dr. Padma Rao.
